ColourPop Blotted Lips and Ultra Blotted Lips, my review

On paper, these new Blotted and Ultra Blotted Lips by ColourPop were right up my alley: a natural, soft, blotted effect on the lips, perfect for summer! Unfortunately, they didn’t really convince me…

Like many, when temperatures rise, I want to wear lighter makeup products. I want some fresh, natural, sheer products but I still want some beautiful colors!

And after I used the Pressed Powder Face Duo, I wanted to try ColourPop’s new lipstick released for summer, which seemed to be ideal to meet my needs for popsicle- like colors!

So I ordered two shades of Blotted Lips and also two others in their liquid version, the Ultra Blotted Lips.

ColourPop Blotted Lips and Ultra Blotted Lips, presentation:

What the brand says about them:

Blotted Lips:

Sheer matte lipstick that creates the perfect popsicle pout! Formula is lightweight, matte and buildable for light to medium coverage.

Ultra Blotted Lips:

A medium coverage matte lipstick that creates a soft, diffused look. It is completely transfer-proof and long-wearing but also lightweight and comfortable. No cracking or flaking! Leaves lips smooth and fresh.

These lipsticks have a lighter pigmentation compared to a classic lipstick, but they’re not exactly like regular sheer lipsticks, which are usually quite glossy. They have a semi-matte finish for the Blotted Lips, and completely matte for the Ultra Blotted Lips.
The Blotted Lips are regular stick lipsticks and the Ultra Blotted Lips are liquid lipsticks.

They both feel very lightweight on the lips. These are the perfect lipsticks for a “no makeup makeup” effect or a light wash of color.
With the Ultra Blotted Lips, the brand also claims that they’re very long-lasting, so this is a plus compared to regular sheer lipsticks, which usually need to be reapplied several times a day.

There are seven colors in the range of the Blotted Lips (they retail for $5), and eight colors in the Ultra Blotted Lips ($6 each).

ColourPop Blotted Lips and Ultra Blotted Lips, my test and thoughts:

– Packaging:

The packaging of the Blotted Lips is a fairly similar to the Lippie Stix from the same brand but less slender, it’s a more classic stick shape.

The packaging of the Ultra Blotted Lips is the same as the other liquid lipsticks from the brand, a tube with a metal cap and a foam applicator.

– Texture:

The texture of the Blotted Lips is like a classic lipstick, but I find it rather “dry“, it doesn’t have a lot of slippery. It’s a semi-matte to matte finish, but it reminds me of these old school matte lipstick formulas, this kind of “glue stick” feeling (if you know Ruby Woo from MAC, you probably know what I mean). In a nutshell, it’s not the most pleasant to apply.

The texture of the Ultra Blotted Lips is quite liquid, and it dries very quickly on the lips.

– Finish:

The Blotted Lips finish is semi-matte to matte. It’s slightly shiny just after you apply it, but it becomes matte rather quickly.

The Ultra Blotted Lips finish is completely matte. It dries quickly, and it becomes transfer-free and kiss-proof

– Scent:

The two formulas are fragrance-free.

 – Color range:

The colors of the two ranges are super pretty and summery. There are lots of pinks, corals, oranges, berries…

– Pigmentation:

The pigmentation is as advertised, quite sheer, but it’s quite buildable in the case of the Blotted Lips.

In the case of the Ultra Blotted Lips, I wouldn’t advise to layer it, as they have a big tendency to crumble and to be patchy. (Unfortunately, this is also the case even with a thin layer, but a thicker layer amplifies and accelerates the issue)

I also find that some shades tend to lack homogeneity on the lips. With the shades closer to the natural color of my lips, it doesn’t show too much, but the brighter colors tend to emphasize any dry patches on my lips. uneasy

– Application:

I’m not a fan of the shape of the Blotted Lips tip, which I find less precise than the Lippie Stix from the same brand. Obviously, as the finish is quite sheer, it doesn’t show too much if you overdraw with it, but still, this round tip is not the easiest to use.

On the other hand, the application is very easy with the foam applicator of the Ultra Blotted Lips.

– Feeling on the lips:

The two formulas are quite matte and leave a very lightweight layer on the lips, like a second skin. You can barely feel them on the lips, especially the Ultra Blotted Lips.
Comfort-wise, I’m not convinced at all. The Blotted Lips are not super drying but they aren’t comfortable either, and I find the Ultra Blotted Lips super drying! They remind me of the Ultra Matte Lips that I hated when they came out. They become uncomfortable super quickly (after a few minutes). I tried to apply some lip balm before, but it makes the application of the liquid lipstick complicated. And if I applied the lip balm over it, it’s slightly better, but the lasting power is affected.

– Lasting power:

The lasting power is not the best, for both formulas.
The Blotted Lips last for a few hours and fade rather nicely, but you definitely have to reapply after a meal and they also transfer.
The Ultra Blotted Lips are not long-lasting, in my opinion. They tend to crumble and be patchy. Fortunately, they’re quite sheer, so it doesn’t show too much.

– Value for money:

I’m not super convinced by either formulas, but at least they didn’t cost me too much money! The Blotted Lips retail for $5 and the Ultra Blotted Lips $6.

ColourPop Blotted Lips et Ultra Blotted Lips, the shades:

– Zuma: a light warm browny mauvy pink. It’s the perfect “my lips but better” shade!

– Doozy: a soft, warm pink, super easy to wear and very luminous.

– Drip: again, it’s a warm brown mauvy pink, but it’s more intense than Zuma, and slightly darker. It’s my favorite color over the four I own!

– On A Stick: a very pretty coral pink, super bright. This shade gives a lot of radiance to the complexion, it’s perfect for summer!

Finally, here are the swatches:

And on me:

– Zuma:

– Doozy:

– Drip:

– On A Stick:

In summary:

[wprs-pros][wprs-cons]

In short, I’m not very convinced by these two formulas. I definitely prefer the Lippie Stix Sheer that came out two years ago and that I find much more comfortable and “soft” on the lips. OK, they don’t have a matte finish, but honestly, I find them much more flattering on the lips!

The Blotted Lips and Ultra Blotted Lips are available on ColourPop website for $5 and $6.

And you, have you tried these ColorPop Blotted and Ultra Blotted Lips? What did you think of them?
