The Boscia MakeUp-BreakUp Cool Cleansing Oil was on my cleansing oils wishlist for at least four years! Yes, it’s been a while… wink
I had a comment about it on one of my oldest articles about the DHC Cleansing Oil (only available in French), and I was super curious to try it. But it’s very complicated to find the brand Boscia if you don’t live in North America. In the US and Canada, it’s available in all the Sephora shops, and it’s a skincare bestseller. The US or Canadian YouTuberss often rave about it in their videos.
So I took advantage of my North American road trip last September to finally buy it!
What is Boscia?
Boscia is an American skin care brand that was founded in 2002. But it was created in Japan by the company FANCL known for its compositions without any conservative, and this since its creation in 1982.
They were clearly precursors because, in 1982, the issue of preservatives in cosmetics was not really a common concern of consumers.
Boscia is my type of skin care brand: it favors plant ingredients while using the resources of technology to obtain innovative and natural products.
Indeed, the name Boscia comes from the association of terms BOtanical and SCIence and it's a nice mixture that you can see in products formulated without chemical preservatives, alcohol (ethanol), bactericidal agents, synthetic perfumes, synthetic dyes, mineral oils, animal ingredients and gluten.
In other words, the brand manufactures the products with a technology which limits drastically the contamination of the air (they use what they call a Clean-Room) and that it favors packagings allowing for an optimum conservation of the formulas (air-less packaging, etc. ).
In short, I repeat, it's typically the kind of skincare brand that interests me: plant-based but without giving up the benefits of technology. For those of us who don't live in the US or in Canada, I really hope we'll find it more easily in the future!smile
I love cleansing oils, and I already tried quite a lot of them. I only check one thing: if they’re mineral oil free! And well, it reduces quite a lot the possibilities because many of the cleansing oils brands are mineral oils based. (I’m looking at you, Shu Uemura!) (Although the brand has expanded its offer in recent years and finally offers cleansing oils based on vegetable oils)
Thankfully, the natural trend helped a lot, and it’s now easier to find a little more choice of water-soluble* cleansing oil without mineral oils. (*: I only use water-soluble oils, which dissolve with water. I’m not fond of simple vegetable oils that remove the makeup very well but leave the skin quite greasy even if you use a cleanser after. That’s why I’m not a fan of coconut oil to remove makeup, for example…)
The Boscia MakeUp-BreakUp Cool Cleansing Oil is one of these cleansing oils with a more natural composition. So I waited patiently for our paths to cross! smile

It’s a face oil that can be used every day, up to twice a day morning and evening. Personally, I only use it in the evening. It removes my makeup and cleanses the skin gently, without leaving a greasy feeling on the skin. It’s a water-soluble oil, so it “breaks” when you rinse it with water. It can be used even if you have oily skin, it’s suitable for all types of skin.
It leaves the skin clean, comfortable and with a very pleasant fresh feeling thanks to the small percentage of eucalyptus it contains. I admit that I was a little afraid that the latter would burn my eyes but not at all, you barely feel it on the face after rinsing, and it feels very nice and fresh!
Boscia MakeUp-BreakUp Cool Cleansing Oil, how to use:
I usually apply it in the evening, because this oil is perfect to eliminate makeup. On top of that this oil can eliminate the sunscreen filters I apply daily and which resist a classic foaming cleanser.
– Before:
I apply it on dry face, always. If you apply it on wet skin, the oil (which is water-soluble) turns into a milk and is less likely to “dissolve” makeup and impurities.
– Massage:
I take 2 to 3 pumps of product, depending on whether I wear a heavy makeup or not, and I apply it on my face and neck. Then I massage the oil with my fingertips for about 30 seconds, beginning with the face and ending with the eyes (well closed to avoid a slight “greasy veil” after rinsing).
– Rinsing:
I add a little bit of water on my face, and the oil turns into a light milk.
I keep on massaging my face and eyes (I insist on my lashes) to facilitate the removal of the product, and I finally rinse everything with a lot of warm water.
All this process takes about 2 minutes, and no trace of makeup remains! The oil is totally removed by water, and there is no greasy feeling on the skin.
I usually continue with a soft face cleansing gel because I’m a double cleansing technique’s fan.
Generally, I also use a thermal water spray and/or a good toner to remove the hard water used for rinsing. And I finish with the application of my skincare products (eye contour, serum, night cream or face oil).
I love to use a cleansing oil at night, it’s an extremely pleasant gesture, like a relaxing massage for my face. I can assure you that since I discovered makeup removing oils, I completely forgot what micellar water is! wink
Boscia MakeUp-BreakUp Cool Cleansing Oil, my test and thoughts:
– Packaging:
It’s a plastic bottle with a pump.
Quite practical and compact. However, the capacity is quite small (150 ml). It also exists in travel format (50 ml).
– Scent:
A very light and fresh scent, which you can barely smell. You can smell the eucalyptus and the menthol it contains but it remains really light.
– Texture:
It’s a rather fluid oil but not too liquid. It’s a very pleasant texture: enveloping without being too thick and easy to massage into the skin.
– Formula:

Regarding the composition, there are many natural ingredients, and I insist again on the fact that it doesn’t contain any mineral oil!
The key ingredients:
– a complex of natural oils (rosehip oils, green tea, avocado, and olive): rich in antioxidant and vitamins E,
– botanical amino acids: they eliminate impurities and excess sebum while revitalizing the skin and maintaining its natural protective barrier of hydration,
– hydrangea leaf: purifies and minimizes the pores appearance,
– eucalyptus: stimulates the natural circulation of the skin for a refreshing and invigorating effect.
– Result:
A feeling of fresh, clean and comfortable skin.
It really removes makeup very well, including waterproof mascara (which is usually the kind I use) without having to rub it strongly. And it’s super easy to rinse.
– Value for money:
It’s not cheap. Although I’m a fan of its quality, I find that $32 is a still relatively high price for a product that will last me 2 months maximum.

Even though I love this oil and the feeling it leaves after I rinse it, I don’t think I will repurchase it right away. I’m glad I could try it, but I will probably go back to my first love, DHC or maybe have a look at Japanese or Korean brands to discover new products.
