If you’re not used to watching makeup tutorials YouTube videos or spending time on Instagram to find some makeup inspirations, you’re probably asking yourself what on earth I’m talking about…
Recently, I watched a lot of YouTube videos for inspiration with my makeup. Because even if I always loved it, I’ve never been very good at makeup, to be honest. I’m not completely bad, I’m OK, but I’m very far from the level of a “makeup artist”. And above all, I suffer from a serious lack of creativity in my makeup.
If I find a makeup ‘look’ that I like, I wear it all the time, almost to death which results in all my makeup look tending to look very similar. And … well, that’s such a shame!
Especially when you have a nice collection of makeup products, it’s silly, isn’t it?
On YouTube, you can find a lot of makeup tutorials but some clearly stand out and are more successful than others. While I was watching my favorite YouTube channels (Kathleen Lights, Nikkie Tutorials etc, the entire list of my YouTube subscriptions is here if you want to take a look ;) ), a name often came up: Jaclyn Hill. I watch a lot more US and UK YouTube channels than French ones.
The first time I watched one of her videos, I almost had to take a sedative, because this girl is so -how to say this diplomatically- so full of life. She is very energetic, bubbly, super smiley all the time. A little too much for me to handle, I admit… I need to watch in small doses wink
Her makeup is super colorful, sometimes very intense, not always my style. But I learn a lot of techniques watching her and especially, if I adjust them to my tastes, it gives me a lot of ideas. Including cool associations of colors that I probably would never think of by myself.
At the moment, Jaclyn does a lot (like A LOT) (it’s a bit too much for me) of collaborations with indie makeup brands and lately she has collaborated with an Australian brand: Becca cosmetics.
To be honest, I don’t really know the brand but I had been hearing raving reviews about their range of highlighters for ages, the Shimmering Skin Perfector (which exist in pressed, cream or liquid versions).
Many US ans UK YouTubers are crazy about them and they are considered as the best highlighters on the market.
So I was very curious to see if they deserved their reputation…

This shade is a limited edition and many say that the color is a middle ground between two existing colors in the permanent range, Moonstone (pale gold) and Opal(yellow gold).
I honestly have no idea because I only own Moonstone in liquid. But when you see the pictures, it makes sense…
For my complexion, Champagne Pop is a great highlighter for summer, it’s perfect on my skin when it’s a little tanned. I don’t think it would clash on my skin when it’s lighter, but I usually prefer these kind of peachy colors during the summer. smile
Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Champagne Pop, my thoughts:
– Innovation and formula:
No innovation here because it’s the classic Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed formula but in an exclusive shade.
Regarding the formula, I must admit that it made me think of a product that I love, Mary-Lou Luminizer by The Balm. And actually, I find it even creamier.
One thing though, it’s actually quite powdery, but if you just tap your makeup brush on the back of your hand to remove the excess powder, there should be no fall outs on the face. wink
However, I took a look at the list of ingredients and I was surprised to see three mineral derived oils (petroleum jelly, paraffin and micro-crystalline wax).
These are emollients (to make the formula creamier), so I guess it’s one of the reasons that makes the product super creamy to the touch. But for me, these are really not very noble ingredients…
Indeed, these ingredients are known as comedogenic and they also are very cheap ingredients so I find it’s such a shame to use such ingredients when you’re a luxury brand. Especially since the product is not exactly cheap.. ($38).
I felt a little disappointed, to be honest…
– Packaging:
The packaging is the same as the other Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed, a very elegant metallic compact with mirror.
I had no problem with mine when I received it (I ordered online at Sephora.com and they are very careful with their deliveries) but apparently the powder is very fragile and soft and I saw many pictures of Champagne Pop completely smashed at delivery…
It’s really a shame because I really wanted to take it with me during my holidays but now I’m not too sure I want to risk it… uneasy
– Finish:
– Finish:
The finish is extremely glowy, without being glittery whatsoever. It’s basically light in a compact! I love it!!!
It’s doesn’t emphasize pores too much but I can’t say that it blurs them neither …;)
– Color:
It’s a rather warm golden tone with a subtle hint of peach in it. I think this color must be suitable for many skin tones.
For me, it’s probably a shade that I would wear more during the warm months because peachy tones look better on me when I have a little bit of a tan.
– Application:
I would say that there are 2 ways to wear Champagne Pop: the subtle, discreet way and the “I am a glow goddess like J-Lo/ But who switched the light on? Oh it’s just my face that is so luminous that it shines like a diamond! ” way.
So for the discreet way (perfect for a day wearing), simply apply the product using a fan brush (I use the Smashbox one) which will just take a little bit of powder and then you sweep it gently on you upper cheekbones. This way, you have the right dose of sheen and it’s rather subtle.
For the glow à la J-Lo, say hi to the new super trendy makeup technique that is all the rage this summer: the strobing!
Yep, contouring is over (finally !!!!). Now, it’s all about healthy, glowing, almost wet looking skin and for that, this new technique is perfect.
What is strobing?
Strobing, which comes from the term “strobe” (like the strobe light) is a makeup technique that is enhancing the luminous parts of the face.
No need to sculpt the face and play with shadow and light like contouring. You just need to apply the highlighter (1 or more different textures to accentuate the effect ex: a liquid one first and then a powder on top of it) to highlight the areas where the face catches more light: the cheekbones, the T-zone, below the eyebrows, the cupid bow…
If you want to apply some bronzer to give a little warmth to your complexion, it’s totally possible but just avoid applying it in a sculpting way, like with contouring. The idea here is to slightly warm the complexion to let the highlighted areas be the “star of the show”. You don’t want intense contouring with intense highlighting, it’s just too much.
In short, it’s the ideal technique to obtain a radiant face with just a touch of shine.
For an oily skin, simply avoid applying the highlighter on the middle of the face (forehead, bridge of the nose and chin tip) so as not to accentuate the shine which is already naturally there.
For this technique, I usually use a brush that takes a little more product (like the ZOEVA 105 brush) and I apply it on top of my cheekbones, above the arch of my eyebrows, on the cupid bow of my lips and also at the inner corner of my eyes.
On days I really want to “shine bright like a diamond”, I even apply it on the top of my shoulders and my decolleté.
– Pigmentation:
The pigmentation is excellent, a little goes a very long way to give you this ultra luminous finish.
– Lasting power:
A very good long lasting power, I wore it several times during some very long days (and I went out in the heat for more than 10 minutes for the ultimate crash test) and I could still see the beautiful glow on my face more than 10 hours later. Awesome!
– Value For Money:
I think it’s overall a very good product. The color is amazing, the pigmentation and the lasting power are also great. But I admit that it bothers me to see 3 petroleum derived ingredients in the list of ingredients for a product that is sold at $38…

I also wanted to show you some comparative swatches with Mary-Lou Manizer by The Balm I mentioned earlier. As you can see, it’s much paler in color… so maybe more suitable for winter? wink

I don’t wear anything else at the moment so I’m a big fan of the color and the finish. I find it really amazing and I’ve been lucky for now (I’ve used it for a few weeks), I didn’t get more zits on my cheeks since! wink
Champagne Pop is available exclusively on the Sephora US website $38. The other shades (Opal and Moonstone) are available at Cult Beauty but I had the worst customer experience in a long time: ordered over 1 month ago and I’ve been told I may get it in September. uneasy
