Obsessed by: dark lips for Fall

Obsessed by dark lips for Fall

I’m obsessed with dark lips right now… Because, yes, finally, it’s Fall!

Well, not really here in Dubai, it’s still more than 30 degrees outside during the day. But let’s just pretend, right?

It’s my first Fall here and I feel a little bit frustrated because it’s really my favorite season, usually. The glowing colors of nature, the come-back of tights and boots (and short dresses/skirts!), the lazy evenings around a cozy fire, the hot chestnuts, my birthday (OK, it’s not really far from Winter, but technically, the end of November, it’s still Fall, isn’t it?).
Take a look at my Pinterest, you will quickly see that I’m slightly obsessed by falling leaves, squirrels, and pumpkins… wink

OK, well here in Dubai, let’s just say that I just appreciate the fact that this atrocious humidity is finally almost gone and that the temperatures are slowly begin to drop.
But let’s face it, I won’t wear my coats and probably not even my tights here!
However, what I can do now is change my makeup! Or at least, wear more of these very “automny” dark red, burgundy, berry, plum shades that I love so much. And I love to wear those especially on the lips!

Which dark red shade is the most flattering?

Well honestly, it all depends on the skin tone.
There are several shades of dark red; some are more burgundy, some will be garnet-coloured, the others more blueish (berry or plum) or even close to a brown red.

I personally think that a browny red is difficult to wear for my kind of (fair) complexion. I usually choose more berry/ plum/ garnet shades. It’s more flattering, and it makes my green eyes pop. wink
My advise would be to try and see for yourself! smile

How to rock the dark lips?

The dark shades can be a little scary at first but depending on the intensity and the opacity of the lipstick, it’s a color that everyone can wear easily.

A tip to avoid the vampire look (which is not bad for Halloween, but for every day, I’m not so sure…), is to not associate dark lips with a smoky eye. That will be a little bit too much.
When I’m wearing dark lips, I usually stick to a very fine line of black eyeliner for my eyes with lots of mascara and that’s all. Or just mascara on its own, especially if I chose very opaque dark red lips. If I look too slammed, a touch of pale shimmery peachy pink in the inner corner of the eye will make me look more “awake”. My old time favorite for years: MAC Jest ( I already got through 2 of these!).
Something very pretty also is to associate dark lips (especially if it’s a very intense shade and/or a matte one) with golden lids.
There are plenty of nice golden eye-shadows but my two favorites at the moment are Mac Amber Lights, a gorgeous golden amber (magnificent on blue eyes) and Kitten de Stila, a very pale and luminous gold (one of the best inner corner highlighters I have ever seen by the way).

Regarding the complexion, make sure you don’t forget the concealer! A flawless complexion is a must for this type of makeup.
But go easy on the blush, otherwise it can be quickly too much. Generally, I choose one blush in the same kind of color (the harmony in monochromatic, it usually works pretty well), and I really apply a tiny bit on the apple of my cheeks.
My favorite: Nars Sin, a shimmery light plum blush or the cream blush from Bobbi Brown, Pot Rouge specifically the shade Raspberry, a deep raspberry pink. This shade is perfect for darker skin tones but if you applied just the tiniest amount, it gives the most beautiful flush on fair skin.

The star of the makeup are really the lips, so the rest of the makeup must be quite simple.

My favorite lipsticks for dark lips:

This one is the easiest to wear.
Despite the very scary color of the bullet (a very dark purple, almost black), it is a shiny lipstick, so the pigmentation is rather light. It gives you a splash of color on the lips.
The lipstick color is a deep purple, almost like a blackcurrant shade. I love this kind of color, it gives your face a fresh and healthy glow!
If I just apply one coat, it’s very light, but it’s possible to add more layers to gain in intensity. The finish is very shiny but without any sparkles.

I find the CHANEL Rouge Coco Shine very nice to wear; it’s super creamy and comfortable. The lasting power is not really amazing, but never mind, it doesn’t bother me, needing to reapply it during the day. Especially with this very chic aspect of the lipstick when you pull it out of your handbag!
It’s not really cheap (35 $) but hey, it’s CHANEL, so it is to be expected…

I’m a huge fan of MAC lipsticks, like any lipstick-addict out there, I guess and Rebel is no exception.
Rebel is a very intense dark purple pink. I find it so beautiful and it’s really a color that brings out the green in my eyes! wink

This is a MAC Satin, with a quite opaque texture, a good coverage and very good pigmentation. The finish is semi-matte, it’s not really shiny.
The lasting power of this lipstick is very good. It doesn’t last all day, but will easily last 4-5 hours.

The value for money is quite good. The price of this lipstick is 16 $, and the quality is excellent, as usual with MAC lipsticks.

This is a recent discovery, but I really think it rocks! I would even say it’s a great dupe of MAC Rebel…
The color is really close, it’s just a little bit darker, and a little less pinky than Rebel. The pigmentation is excellent, and the coverage too. In a single coat, the lips are covered! The finish is shinier than Rebel and it’s creamy and very comfortable to wear.

The lasting power is as good as a MAC lipstick, it lasts on my lips a good half day.
And the price? Well, that’s the good news, it’s really affordable ( 11 $).

I’m super-fan of these new Bourjois liquid lipsticks . I’d already bought 2 this summer (Pink-Pong and Frambourjoise, which I love) and Grand Cru is the new addition to my collection for this Fall. The color of Grand Cru is a rather dark burgundy, quite dramatic. I find it sublime! It’s perfect for an evening makeup, for example.

This is a liquid matte lipstick. It is super pigmented and completely opaque. The formula is super light, I barely feel it on my lips when I’m wearing it and the lasting power is just crazy! It lasts more than 6 hours on my lips.

You can apply it on completely dry lips, using the foam applicator. It is very intense, so you have to be careful not to overdraw. After a few seconds, it’s dry on the lips, completely matte and it won’t go anywhere! It’s a lipstick without transfer so no risk of finding it everywhere.
It’s relatively comfortable, the least of all I’ve introduced here, for sure. It doesn’t however dry the lips like some of the other matte lipsticks.

The icing on the cake? It costs approximately 18 $. The quality is very close from a luxury lipstick, so I really think it’s a good deal!

Finally, here are the swatches:

Yes, I know, the Bourjois is a swatch horror, it smudges and doesn’t transfer very well, but strangely, it doesn’t do that at all on the lips. It’s better that than the other way round, right? wink

And you, what are your favorite lipsticks for Fall? Any recommendations? (because of course, I always need more :))
